Englishbazar Municipality has been selected to be covered in the 2nd phase of IDSMT programme which was a centrally sponsored scheme of Integrated Development of Small and Model Towns (IDSMT) programme introduced in the 6th period by the Govt. of India.  However the programme had undergone major changes in its approach, application and in magnitude so to make it more meaningful and time tested. Finding its place in the priority list, this Municipality has taken this opportunity to chalk out various projects as per guidelines for rendering better civic services to its people in a completely new contemporary mode for furtherance of development of the Municipal area in this district town. 

BASIC INFORMATION

Englishbazar Municipality Malda is flanked by Bangladesh and South Dinajpur at the East, Santhal Parganas of Jharkhand State in the West, Uttar Dinajpur in the North and Murshidabad in the South. Geographically this district town is situated between the latitude 25022’-8’N. longitude 88020’-19E respectively. National Highway (NH-34) proceeds through this district town and rendered it more important and made it approachable from all the parts of the state and the country as a whole.

The town is administratively divided into 29 Wards. The area is 13.25 Sq.Km at present. The population density is 16,308.15 per Sq.Km. in 2011. As per 2011 Census, Englishbazar Municipality had a population of 216,083 and the urban agglomeration had a population of 324,237. The Municipality has a sex ratio of 877 females per 1000 males and 14.9% of the population is under six years old.  Effective literacy was 84.69%; male literacy was 85.44% and female literacy was 83.86%.. Communities that inhabit Malda includes the Bengalis, Gorkha, Marwaris, Biharis, Shershahbadhia and Rajbangsis. Some local forms of Bengali, Maithili, Rajbangsi, Hindi and Urdu are spoken along with local dialects. Commonly spoken languages include Bengali and Hindi. Regional languages include Pabnai, Nawabgangi, Kamtapuri, Shershahabadia, Santali, and Khotta. Old Malda has a number of Shikh populations who suffered in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Density of population has become one of the major issues in Englishbazar resulting an estimated rise in population to the tune of about 3(Three) Lakhs at present due to insurgence from the eroded areas of Malda.
